Travertines of the Bukovynian Dnister Right-Bank Area: New Perspectives on the Genesis and Distribution

Korzhyk V.

Summary:
This article is dedicated to the analysis of the detection of travertines in the Bukovynian Dnister area’s right-bank sector, particularly their distribution, genesis, current activity and differences from travertines of the neighboring Podillya. There were analyzed several types and varieties of modern and relic travertines which give reason to expand the views on their genesis, affinity to various landscape elements and mechanism of evolution. Of particular interest are anomalous travertines formed in the beds of some tributaries of the Dnister, which are confined to areas of stepped waterfalls and form these waterfalls in the same time. It is discussed the need for additional hydrogeological, geochemical and micro-climatic studies to explain this phenomenon. The author provides the basis for corrections and additions to the existing morphological classification scheme of the world’s travertines (A. Pentecost and H. M. Pedley). It is recommended to provide monitoring of the travertines’ formation within key areas.
